Acupuncture
Acupuncture is safe while breastfeeding. No substances are introduced into your body โ€” it uses thin, sterile needles that don't affect breast milk. Some lactation consultants actually recommend acupuncture for issues like plugged ducts, mastitis, and low milk supply, though evidence for these uses is limited. Choose a licensed acupuncturist who uses single-use sterile needles.

Allergy Shots (Immunotherapy)
Allergy shots (allergen immunotherapy) are safe to continue while breastfeeding. The tiny amounts of allergen injected do not transfer into breast milk in any meaningful amount. If you were receiving allergy shots before pregnancy, you can continue them. Starting a new course during breastfeeding is also considered safe.
โš ๏ธCaution
Blood Donation
You can donate blood while breastfeeding, but proceed with caution. Blood donation temporarily reduces your blood volume and iron stores, which are already in higher demand during lactation. Stay very well hydrated, eat iron-rich foods, and be aware that you may feel more fatigued than usual. Most blood banks accept breastfeeding donors.
โš ๏ธCaution
Botox Injections
Botox (botulinum toxin) injections while breastfeeding are a gray area โ€” there's no evidence that it transfers into breast milk, but there are also no studies confirming safety. The toxin molecule is very large and likely stays localized at the injection site. Many dermatologists consider it probably safe, but most recommend waiting until after breastfeeding if it's for cosmetic purposes.

Chest X-Ray
A chest X-ray is completely safe while breastfeeding. Like all X-rays, radiation passes through your body in an instant and does not remain in or alter your breast milk. No pumping and dumping is needed. If a chest X-ray is medically indicated, there is no reason to delay or avoid it.
โœ…Safe
Colonoscopy
A colonoscopy is safe while breastfeeding. The sedation drugs used (typically propofol or midazolam with fentanyl) clear your system quickly, and you can usually resume breastfeeding as soon as you're alert enough to hold your baby safely. The bowel prep is also compatible with breastfeeding โ€” just stay very well hydrated.
โœ…Safe
COVID-19 Vaccine
COVID-19 vaccines are safe and recommended while breastfeeding. Studies have shown that antibodies generated after COVID vaccination do transfer into breast milk โ€” providing your baby with some protective benefit. The mRNA in vaccines is rapidly broken down and does not transfer into breast milk.
โœ…Safe
CT Scan
A CT scan without contrast is completely safe while breastfeeding โ€” the radiation does not affect breast milk. CT scans with iodine-based contrast are also safe; the contrast agents have very low transfer into breast milk and are poorly absorbed from the infant's gut. No pumping and dumping is required for either type.

CT Scan with Contrast Dye
CT scans with iodinated contrast dye are safe while breastfeeding โ€” you do not need to pump and dump. Less than 1% of the contrast dose reaches breast milk, and less than 1% of that is absorbed by the baby's gut. Both the American College of Radiology and AAP say breastfeeding can continue immediately after receiving contrast.
โœ…Safe
Dental Anesthesia / Lidocaine
Local anesthesia at the dentist โ€” including lidocaine, articaine, and mepivacaine โ€” is safe while breastfeeding. These drugs have a short half-life, very low transfer into breast milk, and are poorly absorbed orally. You can nurse your baby right after your dental appointment.
โœ…Safe
Dental Filling
Getting a dental filling while breastfeeding is safe. Composite (white) fillings are the first choice and pose no concern. Amalgam fillings contain mercury โ€” while the risk from a single filling is very low, most dentists choose composite materials for new fillings in breastfeeding mothers as a reasonable precaution.
โœ…Safe
Dental Work with Local Anesthesia
Routine dental work with local anesthesia (lidocaine, articaine) is perfectly safe while breastfeeding. You can nurse your baby immediately after your appointment. The amount of anesthetic that reaches your bloodstream โ€” and therefore your milk โ€” is extremely small and not a concern for your baby.

Dental X-Ray
Dental X-rays are completely safe while breastfeeding โ€” this is one of the most persistent and unnecessary fears among nursing mothers. X-rays do not contaminate breast milk. Radiation passes through your body and is gone instantly; it does not accumulate in milk.
โœ…Safe
DEXA Scan (Bone Density)
A DEXA (bone density) scan is safe while breastfeeding. It uses an extremely low dose of radiation โ€” about 1/10th of a chest X-ray โ€” and like all X-rays, the radiation does not contaminate breast milk. No pumping and dumping is needed. Interestingly, bone density does temporarily decrease during breastfeeding but typically recovers after weaning.
โœ…Safe
Epidural Steroid Injection
Epidural steroid injections for back pain are safe while breastfeeding. The corticosteroid (typically triamcinolone or methylprednisolone) is injected locally into the epidural space, with minimal systemic absorption. The amount that could theoretically reach breast milk is negligible. You can breastfeed normally after the procedure.
โœ…Safe
Flu Shot (Influenza Vaccine)
The flu shot is not only safe while breastfeeding โ€” it's actively recommended. Antibodies you develop after vaccination are passed to your baby through breast milk, helping protect your newborn who is too young to be vaccinated themselves. This is one of the best things you can do for both yourself and your baby during flu season.
โœ…Safe
General Anesthesia
General anesthesia is compatible with breastfeeding. Most anesthetic agents are eliminated from your body quickly and transfer only minimally into breast milk. You do not need to pump and dump after routine general anesthesia โ€” you can breastfeed once you are alert and awake enough to hold your baby safely.
โœ…Safe
HSG (Hysterosalpingography)
An HSG test โ€” where dye is injected to visualize the uterus and fallopian tubes โ€” is safe while breastfeeding. The iodinated contrast used is water-soluble, very poorly absorbed from the uterine cavity, and even the small amount entering the bloodstream does not meaningfully concentrate in breast milk. No pumping and dumping is needed.
โœ…Safe
Laser Skin Treatments
Laser skin treatments โ€” including laser hair removal, IPL (intense pulsed light), and most cosmetic laser procedures โ€” are safe while breastfeeding. The laser energy affects only the targeted skin area and does not produce any substances that could enter your bloodstream or breast milk. Avoid treating the breast or areola area directly.
โœ…Safe
Mammogram
Mammograms are safe while breastfeeding. Like all X-rays, the radiation from a mammogram does not linger in your body or alter breast milk. If your doctor recommends a mammogram while you are nursing, there is no reason to delay or stop breastfeeding. Dense breast tissue during lactation can make imaging more challenging, so let your radiologist know you are nursing.
โœ…Safe
MRI with Gadolinium Contrast
MRI โ€” with or without gadolinium contrast โ€” is safe while breastfeeding. MRI does not use ionizing radiation at all. The gadolinium contrast agent has very low transfer to breast milk and is poorly absorbed by the infant's gut. No pumping and dumping is necessary.
โœ…Safe
Root Canal
Root canals are safe while breastfeeding. The local anesthetics (lidocaine) are compatible with breastfeeding, dental X-rays don't affect milk, and the antibiotics typically prescribed (amoxicillin, penicillin) are also breastfeeding-safe. Pain management with ibuprofen and acetaminophen is fine too. Don't delay needed dental work because you're nursing.
โœ…Safe
Tdap Vaccine
The Tdap vaccine is strongly recommended for breastfeeding mothers, especially if not received during pregnancy. It protects against whooping cough (pertussis), which can be life-threatening for newborns. Pertussis antibodies do pass into breast milk. If you didn't receive Tdap during pregnancy, getting it now is one of the most important things you can do to protect your newborn.
โœ…Safe
Teeth Cleaning (Dental)
Routine dental cleanings are completely safe while breastfeeding. This includes scaling, polishing, fluoride treatments, and sealants. Fluoride treatment during a cleaning involves topical application with very low systemic absorption โ€” it's safe and actually beneficial for your own dental health. Don't delay your dental care while breastfeeding.
โœ…Safe
Therapeutic Ultrasound
Therapeutic ultrasound (used in physical therapy for muscle and joint issues) is completely safe while breastfeeding. It uses sound waves to promote tissue healing โ€” no radiation or chemicals are involved. Interestingly, therapeutic ultrasound is also sometimes used to help treat plugged milk ducts and mastitis.
โœ…Safe
Tooth Extraction
Tooth extraction while breastfeeding is safe. The local anesthesia used is compatible with breastfeeding (see the dental anesthesia entry). Common post-extraction pain relievers like ibuprofen and acetaminophen are also safe while nursing. Let your dentist and oral surgeon know you are breastfeeding so they can select the most compatible options.
โœ…Safe
Ultrasound
Diagnostic ultrasound is completely safe while breastfeeding. Ultrasound uses sound waves โ€” not ionizing radiation โ€” and has no effect on breast milk whatsoever. Whether it's an abdominal scan, breast ultrasound, or any other type, there is no reason to interrupt breastfeeding.
โœ…Safe
Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Wisdom tooth extraction is safe while breastfeeding. Local anesthesia (lidocaine) is compatible with nursing, and even IV sedation (midazolam, fentanyl, propofol) clears quickly enough that you can breastfeed once you're fully alert. Post-op pain management with ibuprofen and acetaminophen is preferred over opioids. If antibiotics are needed, amoxicillin or clindamycin are breastfeeding-compatible.
