Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Wisdom tooth extraction is safe while breastfeeding. Local anesthesia (lidocaine) is compatible with nursing, and even IV sedation (midazolam, fentanyl, propofol) clears quickly enough that you can breastfeed once you're fully alert. Post-op pain management with ibuprofen and acetaminophen is preferred over opioids. If antibiotics are needed, amoxicillin or clindamycin are breastfeeding-compatible.
If your extraction requires IV sedation or general anesthesia, you can breastfeed as soon as you are alert and able to hold your baby safely. The sedation drugs (propofol, midazolam, fentanyl) have short half-lives and transfer minimally to breast milk. If opioid pain medication is prescribed, use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time, and monitor your baby for excess drowsiness. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen together are often sufficient for post-extraction pain.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
