Dental Anesthesia / Lidocaine
Local anesthesia at the dentist — including lidocaine, articaine, and mepivacaine — is safe while breastfeeding. These drugs have a short half-life, very low transfer into breast milk, and are poorly absorbed orally. You can nurse your baby right after your dental appointment.
Lidocaine and similar local anesthetics are given in small amounts for dental work, are rapidly metabolized, and transfer into breast milk at very low levels. Even if any reaches the infant through milk, local anesthetics are poorly absorbed from the gut. Lidocaine is one of the most studied drugs in lactation and is routinely used safely. No pumping and dumping is needed.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
