DEXA Scan (Bone Density)

A DEXA (bone density) scan is safe while breastfeeding. It uses an extremely low dose of radiation — about 1/10th of a chest X-ray — and like all X-rays, the radiation does not contaminate breast milk. No pumping and dumping is needed. Interestingly, bone density does temporarily decrease during breastfeeding but typically recovers after weaning.

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
