Blood Donation

You can donate blood while breastfeeding, but proceed with caution. Blood donation temporarily reduces your blood volume and iron stores, which are already in higher demand during lactation. Stay very well hydrated, eat iron-rich foods, and be aware that you may feel more fatigued than usual. Most blood banks accept breastfeeding donors.

📉May temporarily reduce supply for 1–2 days due to fluid loss; extra hydration helps.
The American Red Cross allows blood donation during breastfeeding. However, lactation increases your iron needs, and donating blood removes approximately 200–250 mg of iron per donation. Monitor for symptoms of iron deficiency (fatigue, dizziness, pale skin) and consider having your iron/ferritin levels checked before donating. Drink extra fluids before and after donation to support both blood volume recovery and milk production. Some mothers notice a temporary dip in supply for 1–2 days after donation due to fluid shifts.
