Dental Work with Local Anesthesia
Routine dental work with local anesthesia (lidocaine, articaine) is perfectly safe while breastfeeding. You can nurse your baby immediately after your appointment. The amount of anesthetic that reaches your bloodstream — and therefore your milk — is extremely small and not a concern for your baby.
Local dental anesthetics like lidocaine and articaine are injected directly into gum tissue and very little enters the systemic circulation. The small amount that does is rapidly metabolized by the liver. LactMed confirms that lidocaine is compatible with breastfeeding. Even procedures requiring multiple injections are safe. If you need nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for anxiety, that is also safe — the gas clears from your body within minutes of removing the mask.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
