Mammogram

Mammograms are safe while breastfeeding. Like all X-rays, the radiation from a mammogram does not linger in your body or alter breast milk. If your doctor recommends a mammogram while you are nursing, there is no reason to delay or stop breastfeeding. Dense breast tissue during lactation can make imaging more challenging, so let your radiologist know you are nursing.

Breastfeeding causes hormonal changes that increase breast density, which can make mammogram images harder to read and may lead to additional imaging. Let your mammography center know you are breastfeeding so they can plan accordingly. Some radiologists prefer ultrasound as a first-line imaging tool in lactating women for this reason. Pumping before the procedure can also improve image quality and comfort.

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
