MRI with Gadolinium Contrast

MRI — with or without gadolinium contrast — is safe while breastfeeding. MRI does not use ionizing radiation at all. The gadolinium contrast agent has very low transfer to breast milk and is poorly absorbed by the infant's gut. No pumping and dumping is necessary.

Less than 0.04% of the gadolinium dose given to the mother appears in breast milk, and of that, less than 1% is absorbed from the infant's GI tract. The American College of Radiology states that breastfeeding can continue without interruption after gadolinium contrast. If you prefer extra reassurance, you could pump before the procedure and feed from that supply for one feeding after — but it is not medically necessary.

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
