Tooth Extraction
Tooth extraction while breastfeeding is safe. The local anesthesia used is compatible with breastfeeding (see the dental anesthesia entry). Common post-extraction pain relievers like ibuprofen and acetaminophen are also safe while nursing. Let your dentist and oral surgeon know you are breastfeeding so they can select the most compatible options.
For simple extractions, local anesthesia is sufficient and is safe while breastfeeding. For surgical extractions requiring sedation, the choice of sedation medication matters — see the general anesthesia entry. Ibuprofen (preferred for dental pain) and acetaminophen are both L1/L2 safety ratings (safest/safer) in the Hale's Medications and Mothers' Milk reference. Avoid opioid pain medications if possible; if prescribed, use the lowest effective dose and watch baby for sedation.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
