Dental X-Ray
Dental X-rays are completely safe while breastfeeding — this is one of the most persistent and unnecessary fears among nursing mothers. X-rays do not contaminate breast milk. Radiation passes through your body and is gone instantly; it does not accumulate in milk.
Myth: "I need to pump and dump after a dental X-ray." This is completely false. X-rays are a form of radiation (like light), not a chemical — they cannot contaminate your breast milk. There is nothing to pump and dump. Go ahead and nurse your baby immediately after your appointment.
Dental X-rays expose only a very small area to very low-dose radiation for a fraction of a second. Even without a lead apron, radiation scatter is negligible. With a thyroid collar and lead apron (standard practice), exposure is essentially zero. Radiation does not alter breast milk chemistry in any way — it cannot linger in your body or milk.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
