Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
Use Benadryl with caution — it can cause sedation in your baby and may reduce your milk supply. For allergies, loratadine or fexofenadine are better choices.
📉Regular use can reduce milk supply. Infant sedation via milk is a documented concern.
Diphenhydramine is a first-generation antihistamine that readily passes into breast milk. Infant drowsiness, irritability, and poor feeding have been reported. It also has anti-galactagogue properties and may reduce milk supply with regular use. Occasional use is unlikely to cause harm but is not ideal. For sleep, address the underlying cause; if medication is needed, discuss safer options with your provider.
Safer Alternatives:
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
