Gulf of Mexico Tilefish

Gulf of Mexico tilefish has some of the highest mercury levels of any fish — it's on the FDA's 'avoid' list for nursing moms. Note that Atlantic tilefish is a different, safer species.

Gulf of Mexico tilefish is specifically called out by the FDA as a fish to avoid while breastfeeding due to very high mercury levels. This is different from Atlantic tilefish, which has moderate mercury and is considered a 'good choice.' If you see 'tilefish' on a menu, ask which variety it is — Gulf tilefish should be avoided entirely.
