OTC Sleep Aid (Doxylamine / Unisom)

Doxylamine (Unisom) is a sedating antihistamine used as an OTC sleep aid. It can cause infant drowsiness through breast milk and may reduce milk supply. Use sparingly if at all.

📉Sedating antihistamines may reduce milk supply with regular use.
Doxylamine is a first-generation antihistamine with strong sedative effects. Like diphenhydramine (Benadryl), it passes into breast milk and can sedate your baby. It may also reduce milk supply. NyQuil contains doxylamine as its sleep-inducing ingredient. For postpartum insomnia, addressing sleep hygiene, pumping schedule, and support from a partner are better first steps. If medication is needed, discuss with your provider.

Safer Alternatives:

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
