Passionflower Tea

Passionflower has sedative and anxiolytic properties, but safety during breastfeeding hasn't been established, and it's generally recommended to avoid it. There's not enough evidence to confirm it's safe for nursing infants.

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is used traditionally for anxiety and insomnia. Its sedative compounds โ€” including flavonoids that act on GABA receptors โ€” could theoretically affect a breastfed infant. LactMed and most herbal safety references recommend avoiding passionflower during breastfeeding due to inadequate safety data. Some alkaloids in the plant have caused harm in animal studies at higher doses. The precautionary principle applies here: when there's no clear evidence of safety and a plausible mechanism of concern, avoid it while breastfeeding.
