Nitrous Oxide (Recreational / Whippets)
Recreational nitrous oxide (whippets) should be avoided while breastfeeding. Repeated use depletes vitamin B12, which is critical for your baby's neurological development. Nitrous oxide also impairs consciousness and coordination, making safe infant care impossible during use.
Nitrous oxide inactivates vitamin B12, and chronic recreational use causes B12 deficiency which can lead to irreversible neurological damage. For breastfeeding mothers, B12 deficiency directly impacts breast milk B12 content, potentially causing serious neurological harm to the infant. Brief medical/dental use of nitrous is different and considered safe (the gas clears from the body within minutes). Recreational use involves repeated, high-dose exposure and is much more concerning.
Safer Alternatives:
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
