Mushroom Coffee
Mushroom coffee blends (typically coffee mixed with extracts of lion's mane, chaga, reishi, or cordyceps) have less caffeine than regular coffee, but the mushroom extracts themselves lack safety data for breastfeeding. While culinary mushrooms are safe, concentrated medicinal mushroom extracts are supplements — and most haven't been studied in nursing mothers.
The coffee component is fine in moderation (count toward your 300mg/day caffeine limit). The concern is the medicinal mushroom extracts: lion's mane, chaga, reishi, and cordyceps have immune-modulating and other bioactive properties that haven't been evaluated for effects on breast milk or nursing infants. These aren't the same as eating mushrooms in cooking — they're concentrated extracts. If you enjoy mushroom coffee, consider switching to regular coffee while breastfeeding and eating culinary mushrooms in your meals instead.
Safer Alternatives:
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
