Regular Coffee
Good news — you don't have to give up your morning cup! Moderate coffee consumption is considered safe while breastfeeding. The key is keeping total daily caffeine under 300mg, which is roughly 2–3 cups of brewed coffee.
Up to 300mg caffeine/day total (roughly 2–3 cups of brewed coffee, ~95mg per 8oz cup)
Caffeine does pass into breast milk, but only about 1% of your intake reaches your baby. Most infants handle this small amount without issue. However, newborns and preemies metabolize caffeine much more slowly, so watch for signs of fussiness, poor sleep, or jitteriness — especially in the early weeks. Spacing feeds so at least an hour passes after your cup can further reduce infant exposure. As babies grow past 3–6 months, they process caffeine faster and the risk decreases.
Safer Alternatives:
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
