Anti-Diarrheal Combo (Bismuth-Free)
Non-bismuth anti-diarrheal products are safe during breastfeeding. Kaolin-pectin preparations work locally and have no meaningful systemic absorption.
Kaolin and pectin anti-diarrheal preparations work by absorbing water and toxins in the GI tract and are not systemically absorbed. They're safe during breastfeeding. Loperamide (Imodium) is also safe. Avoid bismuth-containing products (Pepto-Bismol) — bismuth subsalicylate contains salicylate which can reach breast milk.
