King Mackerel

King mackerel is on the FDA's 'avoid' list — it has very high mercury levels and should not be eaten while breastfeeding. Spanish mackerel is a different fish and is okay in moderation.

King mackerel is among the highest-mercury fish tested by the FDA and EPA. It's specifically listed as a fish to avoid during breastfeeding. It's often caught recreationally in the Gulf and Atlantic, and sometimes confused with Spanish mackerel, which is different and has only moderate mercury. If someone offers you kingfish, politely decline.
