Chemical Sunscreen
Chemical sunscreens (containing oxybenzone, avobenzone, octinoxate, etc.) are absorbed through the skin in small amounts, and some active ingredients have been detected in breast milk. While the levels are generally low, if you want to be cautious, mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) sit on top of the skin and are not absorbed. Sun protection is important — don't skip it.
FDA studies have found that chemical sunscreen ingredients like oxybenzone, avobenzone, and octocrylene are absorbed through the skin and detectable in blood and breast milk. Oxybenzone is the most concerning due to potential endocrine-disrupting properties. However, the measured levels are low and the clinical significance for breastfed infants is unclear. Mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are not absorbed and provide an easy alternative. Regardless of sunscreen type, protect yourself from sun damage — the benefits of sunscreen outweigh the theoretical risks.
Safer Alternatives:
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
