Vitamin D Supplement

Vitamin D is one of the most important supplements for breastfeeding moms. Breast milk is naturally low in vitamin D, so your baby likely needs their own supplement too.

Breast milk contains very little vitamin D regardless of maternal intake — your baby needs a separate infant vitamin D supplement (400 IU/day per the AAP). For mom, 1000–2000 IU/day is the standard recommendation; some providers suggest higher doses (4000–6400 IU/day) to sufficiently enrich milk. Discuss with your provider. Deficiency is extremely common in breastfeeding women.

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
