Vitamin A Supplement

Vitamin A is important for breast milk but high-dose supplementation should be avoided — it's fat-soluble and can accumulate to toxic levels. Get it from food and your prenatal vitamin.

Do not exceed 10,000 IU per day from all sources
Vitamin A is naturally present in breast milk and important for infant immune function and vision. However, it's a fat-soluble vitamin that accumulates in the body. The tolerable upper intake level during breastfeeding is 10,000 IU/day from all sources. High-dose supplements (like 25,000 IU retinol used for skin conditions) should be avoided during breastfeeding. Beta-carotene from food is much safer — your body converts only what's needed.

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
