Vegan Diet

A vegan diet can be nutritionally complete while breastfeeding, but it requires careful attention to key nutrients that are difficult to get from plants alone. Supplementation is essential — particularly vitamin B12, which is nearly absent from plant foods and critically important for your baby's brain development.

Vegan breastfeeding mothers must supplement with: Vitamin B12 (deficiency in breastfed infants can cause serious neurological damage), Vitamin D, Omega-3 fatty acids (especially DHA — use algae-based DHA, not fish oil), iodine, calcium, iron, and zinc. Breast milk B12 content directly reflects maternal intake — even if you don't show B12 deficiency symptoms, your baby can become dangerously deficient. Work with your doctor or dietitian to ensure your supplement regimen covers all bases. A well-planned vegan diet is otherwise compatible with breastfeeding.
