Tree Nuts (Overview)
Tree nuts are safe and nutritious to eat while breastfeeding. Current evidence does not support restricting maternal nut consumption to prevent allergies in breastfed babies — in fact, early exposure through breast milk may help reduce allergy risk. If your baby shows signs of a reaction (eczema, hives, blood in stool), consult your pediatrician about an elimination trial.
The AAP and major allergy organizations no longer recommend that breastfeeding mothers avoid common allergens like tree nuts. Research suggests that maternal consumption of diverse foods — including common allergens — during breastfeeding may actually promote tolerance in the infant. Tree nut proteins can be detected in breast milk, but this is generally considered beneficial for immune development. Only restrict tree nuts if your baby has a confirmed allergy diagnosed by a pediatric allergist.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
