Topical Steroids (Prescription)
Prescription topical steroids are generally safe during breastfeeding. Systemic absorption is low, especially when applied to small areas. Avoid applying to the nipple or areola area immediately before nursing. Consult your healthcare provider.
Prescription-strength topical corticosteroids have low systemic absorption when applied to limited skin areas. No adverse infant effects have been documented. Absorption increases with potency, occlusion (covering with bandage), and application to thin-skin areas. Avoid applying to nipples or areolae; if needed for nipple conditions, wipe clean before nursing. Low- and mid-potency steroids for limited areas are safest.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
