Titanium Dioxide
Titanium dioxide is a white pigment used in candies, chewing gum, baked goods, and supplements. The EU banned it as a food additive in 2022 over concerns about genotoxicity from nanoparticles, though the FDA still permits it. Given the regulatory disagreement, moderate caution is reasonable while breastfeeding — reducing intake of heavily whitened foods is a simple precaution.
EFSA concluded in 2021 that titanium dioxide could no longer be considered safe as a food additive, citing concerns about genotoxicity (DNA damage) from nanoparticles that can accumulate in the body. The EU subsequently banned it in food. The FDA has not followed suit, maintaining that it is safe at current levels. Given the uncertainty and the precautionary principle, breastfeeding mothers may want to be mindful of heavily processed foods containing E171, though occasional exposure is not cause for alarm.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
