Tap Water Contaminants
Municipal tap water in the US is regulated by the EPA and is safe to drink while breastfeeding in the vast majority of cases. If you have concerns about your local water quality, check your utility's annual water quality report or use a certified water filter (NSF-certified for lead removal, for example). Well water should be tested annually.
The EPA sets enforceable limits for over 90 contaminants in public water systems. Fluoride at standard municipal levels (0.7 ppm) is safe and does not concentrate in breast milk. Lead is the primary concern in older homes with lead pipes or solder — if worried, run cold water for 30 seconds before drinking and consider an NSF-certified lead-removal filter. PFAS ('forever chemicals') are an emerging concern in some water systems. Private well water is not EPA-regulated and should be tested annually for bacteria, nitrates, and other contaminants.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
