Spirulina
Spirulina is nutrient-dense but not well studied during breastfeeding. The main concern is contamination — wild-harvested blue-green algae can contain cyanotoxins that are harmful to infants.
Spirulina is rich in protein, B vitamins, iron, and antioxidants. However, spirulina products (especially wild-harvested) can be contaminated with hepatotoxic cyanobacteria toxins (microcystins). Reputable brands using controlled cultivation are safer, but quality control is inconsistent across the supplement industry. Until safety data specific to breastfeeding is available, caution is warranted. Choose third-party tested brands.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
