Smoked Salmon / Lox
Good news — smoked salmon and lox are safe to eat while breastfeeding! The pregnancy restriction around smoked/cured fish doesn't apply once your baby is born.
Myth: Many new moms think smoked salmon and lox are off-limits while breastfeeding, just like during pregnancy. That's not true — the Listeria concern is pregnancy-specific and doesn't apply to breastfeeding.
During pregnancy, smoked salmon is avoided because of the risk of Listeria, which can cross the placenta and harm the fetus. But Listeria doesn't pass through breast milk, so the restriction goes away after delivery. Smoked salmon is low in mercury (same as fresh salmon) and a great source of omega-3s. Enjoy your bagel with lox — you've earned it.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
