Shellfish (Allergen Concern)

Shellfish is safe to eat while breastfeeding! It's a top allergen, but nursing moms don't need to avoid it unless their baby has a confirmed shellfish allergy.

Shellfish proteins that cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals can theoretically pass into breast milk in small amounts, but for the vast majority of babies, this is not a problem. Low-mercury shellfish like shrimp and crab are actually encouraged as nutritious seafood choices during breastfeeding. If you have a family history of shellfish allergy or notice reactions in your baby, discuss it with your pediatrician.
