Scented Candles

Scented candles are generally fine in moderation while breastfeeding, but use them in ventilated spaces and avoid burning them in your baby's room. Some paraffin candles release small amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and soot. Soy or beeswax candles with cotton wicks and natural fragrances are better choices.

The primary concern with scented candles is indoor air quality. Paraffin wax candles can release trace amounts of toluene and benzene when burned, though at levels far below regulatory limits for occasional use. Lead-core wicks (banned in the US since 2003 but still found in some imported candles) can release lead particles. For the safest choice: use soy or beeswax candles with cotton or wood wicks, trim wicks to 1/4 inch, burn in ventilated rooms, and don't burn candles in the room where baby sleeps.
