Salicylic Acid (Topical)

Salicylic acid is a common acne-fighting ingredient in face washes, toners, and spot treatments. Low-concentration products (0.5–2%) used on a small area are generally considered low risk while breastfeeding. However, high-concentration peels or body treatments over large areas should be avoided.

Salicylic acid is related to aspirin and can be absorbed through the skin. The FDA advises caution with high-dose topical salicylates during breastfeeding. For typical over-the-counter face products in small areas, absorption is minimal and the risk is low. Avoid high-percentage body lotions or professional-strength treatments. Glycolic acid or azelaic acid are well-studied alternatives.

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
