Retinol / Retinoids (Topical)

Topical retinoids — including retinol and prescription-strength tretinoin — should be avoided while breastfeeding. While topical absorption is generally low, retinoids are derived from vitamin A which can be toxic in excess, and there is insufficient safety data to confirm they are safe for nursing infants.

Retinoids are teratogenic (cause birth defects) at high doses and are strictly avoided during pregnancy. While topical products result in lower blood levels than oral forms like isotretinoin (Accutane), the safety data for breastfeeding is lacking. Most dermatologists and lactation consultants recommend avoiding all topical retinoids while nursing as a precautionary measure. Switch to a gentle vitamin C serum or niacinamide for anti-aging benefits instead.

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
