Red Clover Tea
Red clover tea should be used with caution while breastfeeding due to its isoflavone content, which has mild estrogenic activity. These phytoestrogens could theoretically affect hormonal balance and milk production. Occasional use is probably fine, but daily consumption of concentrated red clover is not recommended during breastfeeding.
📉Phytoestrogens in red clover may theoretically oppose prolactin and reduce milk supply.
Red clover contains isoflavones (biochanin A, formononetin, genistein, daidzein) that bind to estrogen receptors. In breastfeeding, estrogen opposes prolactin and can reduce milk supply. While the estrogenic activity of red clover isoflavones is much weaker than actual estrogen, concentrated tea or supplement forms could theoretically have an effect. Some herbalists include red clover in nursing tea blends, but LactMed recommends caution.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
