Raw Milk

Raw (unpasteurized) milk is not recommended while breastfeeding because it can carry dangerous bacteria that can make you seriously ill. The bacteria don't pass through breast milk, but getting sick while caring for a newborn is rough.

Raw milk can contain Salmonella, E. coli O157:H7, Listeria, Campylobacter, and other pathogens. The FDA and CDC strongly advise against drinking raw milk, especially for new mothers. The concern isn't direct harm to your baby through breast milk — it's that these pathogens can cause severe foodborne illness in you at a time when you need your strength. If you do choose to drink raw milk, that's a personal decision, but understand the risks to your own health.
