Raw Food Diet
A raw food diet while breastfeeding is a caution due to increased food safety risks and the difficulty of meeting caloric and nutritional needs. Raw diets exclude cooked foods, which limits calorie-dense options and increases exposure to foodborne pathogens at a time when adequate nutrition is critical.
📉Low caloric intake from raw food diets can reduce milk supply.
Raw food diets are typically very low in calories, which makes it hard to meet the extra 400–500 calories per day breastfeeding demands. They also increase exposure to foodborne bacteria (Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria) from raw sprouts, unpasteurized juices, and raw animal products. Key nutrients like B12, iron, zinc, and calcium are harder to obtain. If you follow a raw diet, supplement B12 and iron, ensure adequate caloric intake, and avoid unpasteurized dairy and raw sprouts.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
