ℹ️Myth BustedCurated
Rare / Medium-Rare Burger
A pink burger is safe while breastfeeding! Like steak, the recommendation for fully-cooked ground beef was to protect your baby during pregnancy — not a breastfeeding restriction.
Myth: Foodborne pathogens from undercooked ground beef do not transfer through breast milk. The fully-cooked burger recommendation during pregnancy was to protect the fetus.
Ground beef carries a higher E. coli risk than whole cuts because surface bacteria can be mixed throughout during grinding. This is why fully cooking ground beef is recommended generally. However, while breastfeeding, E. coli and other foodborne pathogens do not pass through breast milk. The risk is to you — not your baby through milk. That said, food safety is always a good practice.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
