Processed & Ultra-Processed Food

Occasional processed food is fine, but a steady diet of ultra-processed foods isn't ideal while breastfeeding. Your nutrition directly affects the nutritional quality of your milk — and your own energy levels.

Ultra-processed foods tend to be high in sodium, added sugars, artificial additives, and unhealthy fats while being low in the nutrients breastfeeding moms need. While no single food is forbidden, a diet heavy in processed foods may affect the fatty acid and micronutrient profile of your milk over time. Aim to build your diet around whole foods, but don't stress about occasional treats.
