Poppy Seed Tea
Poppy seed tea should be absolutely avoided while breastfeeding. It contains variable, potentially high amounts of morphine and codeine that transfer into breast milk and can be fatal to infants.
Poppy seed tea is made by washing whole unwashed poppy seeds, extracting raw opium alkaloids including morphine, codeine, and thebaine. Potency is highly variable and unpredictable. Morphine and codeine transfer into breast milk and cause infant sedation, respiratory depression, and death. Even culinary poppy seeds used in baking can cause positive opioid drug tests, but tea concentrations are far higher. This is a serious and life-threatening risk.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
