Phenylephrine

Phenylephrine is a decongestant with a better breastfeeding safety profile than pseudoephedrine, though it's also less effective. Use with caution and prefer saline spray when possible.

Phenylephrine has less evidence of reducing milk supply than pseudoephedrine, and transfers into milk in smaller amounts. However, it's also less effective as a decongestant (controversial efficacy). If you need a systemic decongestant, phenylephrine is the safer choice over pseudoephedrine. Saline nasal spray and a humidifier are the safest options.

Safer Alternatives:

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
