Peppermint (Herb)

Peppermint in large amounts — like supplements, essential oils, or strong herbal teas — can reduce milk supply. Culinary amounts in food and gum are generally fine.

📉Anti-galactagogue. Concentrated forms can reduce supply; culinary amounts are generally fine.
Peppermint contains menthol, which can reduce prolactin levels. Anecdotal and traditional evidence strongly supports its use to decrease supply during weaning. Concentrated forms like peppermint oil, strong peppermint tea, or peppermint extract supplements carry meaningful supply-reduction risk. Casual mint in cooking or a piece of gum is not a concern.

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
