Paint Fumes
Brief exposure to latex paint fumes is unlikely to affect your breast milk, but prolonged exposure in poorly ventilated spaces should be avoided. Use low-VOC or zero-VOC paints when possible, ensure good ventilation, take breaks for fresh air, and keep your baby out of freshly painted rooms until the paint is fully dry and the smell has dissipated.
Modern latex paints are water-based and release much lower levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) than older oil-based paints. Brief exposure during painting a room is generally considered safe for breastfeeding mothers. However, prolonged exposure in enclosed spaces can cause headaches, dizziness, and respiratory irritation. Oil-based paints, paint strippers, and spray paints release significantly more VOCs and should be avoided. Lead paint (in homes built before 1978) is a separate, serious concern — never sand or scrape old paint without professional testing.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
