Oven Cleaner

Commercial oven cleaners contain strong caustic chemicals (like sodium hydroxide/lye) and have intense fumes. While systemic absorption is low with normal use, the fumes are harsh and the product should be used with heavy ventilation, gloves, and eye protection — keeping baby out of the kitchen entirely during and after use.

The primary risks of oven cleaner are direct contact (caustic burns) and fume inhalation. These products should be used with the oven door open and windows open, with the kitchen ventilated for at least 30 minutes after use. Rinse the oven thoroughly before cooking. There is no specific breastfeeding contraindication from a milk transfer standpoint — the caution is the same as for any adult: avoid inhaling concentrated fumes and avoid skin contact with the caustic material.
