Oregano Essential Oil

Oregano essential oil is a 'hot' oil that should be used with caution while breastfeeding. It contains high levels of carvacrol and thymol, which are strong skin irritants and should never be applied undiluted. Internal use is not recommended during breastfeeding. It may also affect milk supply. This is different from culinary oregano, which is safe.

📉Oregano essential oil may decrease milk supply in some mothers; culinary oregano is not a concern.
Oregano essential oil is extremely concentrated — far more potent than the herb used in cooking. It contains 60–80% carvacrol, a phenol that can cause severe skin irritation and chemical burns if applied undiluted. Some lactation resources suggest it may decrease milk supply, though evidence is limited. Culinary use of oregano (the dried or fresh herb) is completely safe and unrelated to essential oil use. If you do use oregano essential oil, dilute to 0.5% or less and keep far from your breasts.
