Minoxidil (Rogaine)
Topical minoxidil (Rogaine) should be avoided while breastfeeding. While postpartum hair loss is frustrating, minoxidil can be absorbed through the scalp into the bloodstream and has been shown to transfer into breast milk. It's a vasodilator that could cause cardiovascular effects in an infant. Wait until after breastfeeding to use it.
Minoxidil was originally developed as an oral blood pressure medication and is a potent vasodilator. Even when applied topically, 1โ2% is absorbed systemically. It has been detected in breast milk, and given that infants have immature cardiovascular systems, the potential for adverse effects (hypotension, tachycardia) is a real concern. Postpartum hair loss typically resolves on its own within 6โ12 months. If it's severe, discuss other options with your dermatologist.
Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
