Microplastics

Microplastics are now found everywhere — in water, food, and air — and have been detected in human breast milk. While the health effects are still being studied, you can reduce exposure by using glass or stainless steel containers, filtering your water, avoiding heating food in plastic, and choosing fresh foods over heavily packaged ones.

Studies published in 2022–2024 have confirmed microplastics are present in human breast milk, blood, and placental tissue. The long-term health effects of microplastic ingestion in infants are not yet fully understood, but early research suggests potential endocrine disruption and inflammatory effects. Practical steps to reduce exposure: avoid microwaving food in plastic containers, use glass or stainless steel water bottles, filter drinking water, and reduce use of single-use plastics. Despite their presence in breast milk, breastfeeding still provides far more benefits than risks.
