Metformin

Metformin is considered safe during breastfeeding. It transfers into breast milk in small amounts and infant exposure is minimal. Consult your healthcare provider.

Metformin is commonly used for type 2 diabetes and PCOS. Breast milk levels are low and relative infant dose is small. Multiple studies show no adverse effects in breastfed infants of metformin-treated mothers. The AAP considers it compatible with breastfeeding. Monitoring infant blood glucose is not routinely necessary but may be considered for younger infants.

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
