Melatonin

Melatonin is present naturally in breast milk and helps regulate your baby's sleep cycles. Supplementing adds more — which may disrupt your baby's developing circadian rhythm.

Melatonin naturally concentrates in nighttime breast milk and plays a role in establishing your baby's sleep-wake rhythm. Taking a melatonin supplement increases the amount your baby receives, which could theoretically interfere with their circadian development. Short-term occasional use is unlikely to cause harm, but regular nightly use during breastfeeding is not well studied. Some providers consider low doses (0.5mg) acceptable occasionally.

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
