MDMA / Ecstasy

MDMA (ecstasy/molly) should be avoided while breastfeeding. It transfers into breast milk and can cause serious adverse effects in infants. MDMA also impairs your ability to respond to your baby's needs and can cause dehydration and hyperthermia in you.

MDMA is an amphetamine derivative that increases serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. It transfers into breast milk and could cause serotonergic effects in a nursing infant. Effects in the mother last 3โ€“6 hours but metabolites persist much longer. If accidental exposure occurs, pump and discard milk for at least 48 hours. The AAP classifies amphetamines as contraindicated during breastfeeding.

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
