Marijuana (Smoked)

Avoid marijuana while breastfeeding. THC is fat-soluble and accumulates in breast milk at 8x the maternal blood concentration, staying detectable for days to weeks. The AAP, CDC, and AAP all strongly advise against it.

THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is highly lipophilic (fat-loving) and concentrates in breast milk at levels 8 times higher than maternal blood plasma. It is stored in infant fat tissue and brain tissue, and has a very long elimination half-life in infants. Studies link infant THC exposure through breast milk to impaired neurodevelopment, reduced motor development, and altered brain structure. There is no established safe level of infant THC exposure. Additionally, smoking exposes the baby to secondhand smoke. Legality does not equal safety during breastfeeding.

Always confirm with your doctor or lactation consultant before making dietary changes while breastfeeding.
